COMMON QUESTIONS

  • Flight training costs can vary depending on several factors. The main one being how often you fly, the more you fly the quicker you learn. If too much time passes, flight time will be used to 'brush up'. In addition, how much home studying your are willing to put in.

As a general estimate, it can range from $12,500 - $15,500. There are some ways to reduce that to as low as $9,000 or even off set the cost with scholarships. We can discuss all of these things during a discovery call.

  • Most students earn their Private Pilot License in 3-6 months with consistent training. The FAA requires a minimum of 40 hours (35 under Part 141), but the national average is closer to 60-70 hours. Timeline depends heavily on training frequency - students flying 2-3 times per week typically finish in 3-4 months, while those flying once weekly may take 6-12 months. Weather, aircraft availability, and your individual learning pace also affect completion time

  • Reno offers excellent training conditions that actually make you a better pilot. While high elevation (4,403 feet) and hot summers create density altitude challenges, learning in these conditions builds superior skills.

The challenging conditions you'll master here - mountain flying, density altitude, working in a controlled airspace and variable weather - make you safer and more capable than pilots trained in "easier" locations

  • Flying is safer than ever before, with general aviation accident rates at historic lows. I prioritize safety in every lesson, focusing on thorough emergency procedure training so you’re fully prepared for any situation. Most incidents stem from pilot error, which is why I emphasize strong aeronautical decision-making and hands-on, scenario-based instruction. With the right training and mindset, flying is a safe, rewarding adventure.

  • Yes, there are several financing options available. We can discuss all the options during our discovery call / flight.

  • Aim for 2-3 flights per week for optimal progress and cost-effectiveness. Most instructors recommend scheduling 3 flights weekly, expecting weather and scheduling to allow 2 actual flights. Flying less than twice weekly leads to excessive review time and increased costs, while more than 3 times weekly can cause information overload. Consistency is key - missing multiple weeks significantly impacts progress and extends training time

  • Yes, of course! You now get to enjoy your new ratings! At Biggest Little Flight School (where I teach), you'll automatically be checked out and able to fly the same planes you trained on. . . but this time you can bring your friends & family!  Most rentals require: valid pilot certificate, current medical, recent flight experience, checkout flight with an instructor, and renters insurance. In addition, their are some flying clubs in town as well that have different aircraft available. However, those may require additional training or check-out flights.
